MLA Guide for Word 2019

Header

MLA requires that your header (the area above the first line of text in your document) include both your last name and a page number. Your last name and page number should be on all pages throughout the research paper. While this can be done a number of different ways, the method outlined below is the quickest:

1. In Word 2016, go to the Insert tab.  Select “Page Number”.

2. Choose “Top of Page” and “Plain Number 3”.

3. The number “1” will now appear in the top-right corner of your document. Immediately type in your last name and press the spacebar once.

4. Exit the header field by clicking on “Close Header and Footer” or by pressing the Esc key on your keyboard.

First Page

On the first line below the header, include the following (as seen here):

  1. Your Name
  2. Your instructor's name
  3. Your course name
  4. The date (day month year)

Type and center your paper's title on the next line. On the next line, indent once and begin typing in the body of your paper.
